Channel Guard™
UV protected plastic that creates a debris “fence” on our Leafproof ® Gutter Protection system. This debris fence prevents debris from entering in to the water channel while allowing rain water to flow freely in to the gutter.
See Channel Guard™ page for more information

Diamond Pro™
Diamond Pro™ with the accessory screen has diamond shaped openings to allow rainwater to easily flow into the gutter, while the accessory screen keeps leaves and even the smallest debris out. Superior alternative from cheap gutter screens and vinyl products because they can cave in from the weight of ice and snow. Cheap gutter screens also become clogged, and with vinyl covers, squirrels and rodents easily chew through them.

Downspout
A pipe that carries rainwater from a roof gutter down to a drain or to the ground.

Drainage
A system of gutters and drainpipes that carry water away from the foundation of a house.

Drip-Edge Extension
Prevents water from washing over the fascia eventually causing it to rot. If your fascia boards have black streaks on them, that usually means that the drip-edge is failing and it may be suggested to add an extension.

Drop Outlet
Formed piece that serves as the hole from which the water travels from the horizontal section of the gutter to the downspout.

Elbow
Pre-finished angled piece for directing water flow.

End Cap
Flat formed piece that is placed at the end of a gutter section.

Fascia
Also referred to as fascia board, fascia is a type of roof trim mounted on the exposed ends of rafters or the top of exterior walls to create a layer between the edge of the roof and the outside, protecting the roof and the interior of the house from weather damage.  Fascia board can be vulnerable to water damage, leading to rot which can spread to the rafters and roofing materials.

Fascia Replacement
New gutters need a solid fascia surface upon which to be mounted. If rotted boards need to be replaced, there is a usually a charge per linear feet. Fascia boards narrower than 3” in width must be built out to provide proper support for hanging your new gutters and normally require an additional charge per linear feet.

Gauge
The thickness or the gauge of the gutter is very important. Primary aluminum is the thickest and most consistent available. The gauges range from .019 to .032 inches. The optimal thickness is .032 inches so when buying aluminum gutters, insist on primary aluminum, which is the best.

Gutters
Horizontal channels installed at the edge of a roof to carry rainwater or melted snow away from the house.

Gutter Covers/Protection
Leaf screens or mesh: These metal coverings fit inside against the back of the gutter and across the top. They act like a strainer and filter out the leaves and debris, allowing only water to run through your gutters and out the downspout. They still may require a periodic cleaning because debris can build up on top of the screens.

Solid cover with side slots: This type of gutter guard relies on the principle of "water adhesion". The water enters the gutter through slots or small holes located underneath a lip or on the vertical side. The leaves and other large debris fall over the edge to the ground. Any tiny debris that remains in the water just flows through the gutter and out the downspout. The natural surface tension of water causes it to cling to the guard edge and flow into the slots.

Gutter guards that snap-in: Made of vinyl or aluminum, these solid gutter covers snap onto the top front of the gutter and slip under your shingles. It can be beneficial to install these gutter guards when you are installing a new roof so as not to disturb the existing roofline. There are also gutter guards available that rest on top of the roof shingles but this type may blow off in high wind conditions. Leafproof® Gutter Protection - Make your gutters ABSOLUTELY Leafproof®

Hanger
A flat strap installed under the roofing material that holds up the horizontal section of the gutter.

Ice Dams
Ice dams are formed when heat from the attic melts snow at the ridge or peak of the roof causing an "avalanche" of snow and ice to overflow the gutters. The melted water can then back up under the shingles and work its way into the house.

Inside mitre box
A corner piece of the horizontal section that is deflected in.

Leader
A pipe that carries rainwater from the gutters to the ground, sewers, or wells.

Pitch
The angle at which a horizontal section of gutter is tilted in order to force water to flow toward a downspout.

Outside mitre box
A corner piece of the horizontal section that is deflected out.

Overhang
The portion of the roof that extends beyond the walls of a home. The soffit or eave is the underside of an overhang.

Run Height
The height (in stories) at which each gutter run will be located (1st story, 2nd story etc.). This is used to determine the length of downspout needed.

Run Length
A straight section of gutter mounted against the fascia board. It is measured in linear feet, which measures the same as regular feet.

Seamless Gutter Machine
The chosen gutter material is rolled through the forming machine to create a continuous piece of gutter that is custom sized to your home.

Snaplock
Aluminum and nylon construction far outlasts rivets or screws for the most reliable fastener available!
See Snaplock page

Soffit
The underside of the roof overhang or porch ceiling that covers the rafter bottoms. This horizontal surface usually has vents to allow air into the attic.

Spike and Ferrule
Another method to attach gutters to a home using a metal tube that is placed inside the gutter to strengthen it and keep it from bending. The spike is driven through the face of the gutter at the top, through the ferrule and into the wood fascia board. Spike and ferrule hangers tend to pull out of the wood over time which can cause the gutters to sag.

Splash guard
A plastic or concrete surface put under a downspout to direct water away from the house.

Strap
Flat hangers that are nailed into the house to hold the downspouts in place.
